In my therapy I have high school students, graduates, and their parents. And of course, at the end of the school year, when state certification is ahead, they ask about how to help their children prepare for this difficult and exciting stage. And not only teenagers, but also their parents need to prepare, because parents’ attitude towards exams can not only help children, but also hinder them, loading them with unnecessary stress from the family situation. In this article I will tell you how parents can cope with their anxiety and expectations from upcoming events. During the preparation for the Unified State Exam, graduates and their parents have a lot of worries. These feelings are normal because we are living people and react emotionally to significant events. A certain level of excitement is even necessary, it forces us not to sit idly by, but to take concrete actions to prepare for exams. But if the level of anxiety is so high that it paralyzes actions, deprives you of sleep or interferes with normal life, then measures must be taken. And sometimes even seek help from specialists. First of all, parents need to cope with their own anxiety so as not to interfere with their child’s preparation for exams. Most often, this anxiety is caused by very specific fears: what if he doesn’t pass, what if he doesn’t get in, doesn’t get the required score... As a rule, anxiety increases when we attribute very great importance to some event, consider it fateful or decisive. The level of anxiety is reduced if we imagine our actions in as much detail as possible in the event of different outcomes of the event. Therefore, parents need to think through backup options in advance and provide their child with help in preparing for exams in advance. After all, preparation for the Unified State Exam begins more than one year before. Sit down, breathe out, think about what you have already done to help your child. This is your range of responsibility. And then there is the responsibility of the graduate himself, his tutors, and teachers. Well, it’s a matter of chance, finally. The greatest difficulty is presented by parental expectations from a child during exams and studies. We all want our child to be successful, to get settled in society, and to receive a good education. We expect high results and achievements from our children. In the end, we as parents want to be proud of our children, and their success is a reward for our sleepless nights and contribution to their upbringing. But at the same time, we sometimes forget how difficult it is to meet other people's expectations and bear the burden of parenting. Remember that happiness is not equal to a career, education, and especially exams. And many people received an education after they found an occupation or job they liked and realized that this is what they want to do for the rest of their lives. I wish you and your children success, stability and an atmosphere of cooperation and mutual understanding.
