Preface. When I was 18, I chose my future profession. I admit, I went into psychology more out of interest (what are we going to study there?) than out of intention to work. I decided this: I’ll finish my studies, and then I’ll figure out what to become.☺But time passed, and with each course psychology penetrated more and more into my life and seemed like a pretty good option for a profession. However, during my studies, there was still an opinion that no one needed psychologists. When my mother’s friends found out who her daughter had enrolled in, they shook their heads and said, “Where will she work?” And I always told my mother: “Mom, tell me that I will be a psychologist.” In general, for some reason I believed in this area. It always seemed to me that it would take literally a few years for psychology in Russia to become something familiar and necessary. I believe this is what happened. In connection with the popularization of science, quite a lot of good (and not so good) specialists appeared. How to choose from a large number exactly the one who will help? Let's figure it out.1. Education. It’s good when a psychologist has a basic education (bachelor’s/specialist/master’s degree) and advanced training in a narrower profile. Perhaps there are psychologists who work well with only one of these components. But we must understand that by completing only courses, a psychologist will most likely lack basic knowledge about the psyche. But working as a psychologist after only graduating from college is quite difficult. Lack of practical skills. Therefore, combination is the best option.2. Topics it works with. Read the description, the psychologist’s story about himself. As a rule, there is information about what people most often come with and what problems it helps to cope with. If suddenly you haven’t found your situation among others, don’t hesitate to ask a question. Perhaps your problem simply does not occur that often, so it was not included in the description.3. Publications. Look at how the psychologist talks and what he writes about. This will allow you to estimate what he is like at work and will provide information about the psychologist’s education better than his diploma.4. Photography and general impression. It’s good when a psychologist is pleasant to you in some way, inspires sympathy and trust. This criterion, in my opinion, is as important as education. Because, despite all the merits, if a person is unpleasant to you, it is unlikely that you will have a good meeting atmosphere. So choose someone you want to trust. In conclusion. As a student, I heard the following phrase from a teacher: “For every psychologist there is a client.” It's true.
