From the author: Very often, when working with clients, there are many open questions regarding the responsibilities and duties of the parties involved in solving the client’s problems. This article is a direct answer to many questions that arise during collaboration. “Define the meaning of words, and you will free humanity from half of its worries,” - Rene Descartes Contract for long-term psychotherapy This contract consists of the rules in accordance with which psychotherapy occurs. Psychotherapy occurs once a week. The duration of one session is 60 minutes. More infrequent meetings, as a rule, do not provide sufficient intensity of the client's self-discovery processes, which can help the desired changes. For the first twenty weeks we meet without interruption. At the first stage of psychotherapy, this is necessary to more quickly build trust between us and clearly set work goals. For the same reason, no more than two appointments can be canceled during the first twenty weeks. If you want to take a break from work, you can do so after the first twenty meetings. The exception is situations of illness and departures, but about the latter you need to notify me no later than two weeks in advance. For my part, I will also notify you of my planned departures. I am also ready, if necessary, to accept you outside of the schedule, if there is time for this in my schedule. We determine the time of our meetings at the first meeting, and in the future this time becomes your fixed time. This is convenient: there is no need to additionally coordinate the time of the visit, it is difficult to forget or confuse it. Meeting times can be changed if you need it and if I have the opportunity. It is important to understand that if you are late for your scheduled time, our appointment will be shortened by the length of your delay. Usually, unfortunately, I am not able to rearrange my work schedule in such a way as to compensate you for the time you are late. For the reason that the sessions in my schedule follow each other, and for this I would have to move all the other consultations of that day. So please arrive on time. For the same reasons, please do not arrive before your scheduled time. Collaboration in work I use different methods in my work. I draw with clients, play, and sometimes perform small dramas or experiments. You have every right to refuse all this if you do not like certain methods of work. My main method is dialogical gestalt therapy. There are no special things you have to do during our sessions except one thing. I expect you to be ready for dialogue. By this I mean your willingness to study with me your inner world, your reactions to various internal and external events, your feelings on these discussions. There is nothing that I think it is possible to force you to do. I am deeply disgusted by the idea of forced self-exposure and the obligation to tell a psychologist as many details of my life as possible. In my opinion, there is no direct need for this. Willingness for dialogue is the only but obligatory condition of our work. If you are unhappy with the way our work is going, I strongly invite you to discuss it with me. A dead end or difficulty in psychotherapeutic work may indicate hidden opportunities that we are not using, that work tasks have been set inaccurately, or that the wrong way to achieve them has been chosen. Additionally, the feeling of being stuck may be part of your internal process, which is also extremely important information for both of us. Psychotherapy sometimes evokes different strong feelings in different people. Feelings sometimes prompt us to make different decisions and perform actions. It is important to understand that decisions made based on strong feelings may be premature or incorrect. Please refrain from spontaneously making important decisions during your psychotherapy. If you want to complete psychotherapy
