Among all the experiences of visiting various supervisions, I would like to share my experience of visiting Balint groups. I visited BG twice, once a month, and intend to continue my participation. Why do I like this format? Balint groups give a lot in clarifying what happens in the contact between the customer (psychologist) and the client. The following happens in the work: 1. The customer voices a problem (case).2. Participants ask questions that clarify the case (information mainly about the client, his request, what happened with the client during therapy). 3. Participants voice their feelings and emotions that arose when the case was presented.4. Participants voice the metaphors that appeared when the case was presented.5. Participants analyze what happened in the client’s relationship with the psychologist. Unlike supervision, participants in the Balint group do not give any recommendations, do not evaluate the specialist’s work and do not touch upon the therapist’s personality. There are exceptions. During the intensive work of the group, it can be difficult for participants to maintain focus on the analysis of their own feelings, fantasies and not “slide into recommendations.” But the BG leader must remove such a question. Or the psychologist himself may refuse to answer questions that criticize the method or affect the personality of the psychologist (for example, questions about his personal life, what is happening with the psychologist at a given moment in time, the success of personal therapy, etc.). This approach makes it possible: 1. Reduce the risk of injury to young professionals due to the absence of direct/indirect criticism;2. Expand the perception of the relationship with the client, the client’s request, and one’s own countertransference reactions; 3. Improve understanding of the boundaries of the other, by understanding the limits of one’s own interpersonal communication skills; 4. Improve empathy and feedback skills;5. Find a solution to a problem situation on your own after a deeper group analysis (not of work, but of feelings and emotions that arise in contact). Balint groups cannot become a replacement for classical individual or group supervision, despite the fact that any of the above formats performs the functions of preventing professional burnout and improves work quality. If possible, I attend: 1-2 group supervisions per month; 1-2 intervisions per month; more recently - 1 Balint group per month.
