ACCEPTANCE AND RESPONSIBILITY THERAPY (ACT) IN PRACTICE. I cover the work in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, then ACT - Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, I give an example of working with anxiety. ACT is a model of 3rd generation behavioral therapy , aimed at changing attitudes towards internal experience, and building a meaningful life. The founder of this approach is Stephen Hayes, an American clinical psychologist, Nevada Foundation Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Nevada at Reno, where he is a teacher in their doctoral program in behavior analysis. Essentially, in the most simplified form, omitting information about the theory of relational frames and functional contextualism, on which ANT is based, this therapy can be described in terms of 3 steps: - open up to what is happening inside; - choose what makes sense to you; - start acting. In ANT, this or that symptom is understood as a normal manifestation person. The goal of therapy is psychological flexibility developed in the process of work, the ability to be in the present moment and build one’s behavior based on the values of the individual. ANT is a non-linear approach, that is, it does not have a universal response to the posed request (as, for example, in psychoanalysis) , however, any request can be considered from the point of view of how the person himself evaluates the phenomenon happening to him, with which he turned to a psychologist. Firstly, a person’s orientation in the present real time is taken into account; this will show how much anxiety is related to past events or those that may happen in the future. Next, we consider the degree of connection of thoughts, feelings and emotions with these events, that is, how much they influence a person’s life here and now. The degree of acceptance of everything that happens in a person’s inner world is also diagnosed, the extent to which he recognizes and accepts feelings, emotions, his thoughts as the natural nature of his being and what he does based on this. The client’s self-observation and reflection are also taken into account, how developed it is and how critically the person evaluates his situation. His values are also clarified, self-esteem is determined, and it becomes clear what exactly a person does for the life he strives for, as well as what he is ready to do if he unconsciously acted in a completely different direction. I will give the most common example of how an overly anxious client should treat to your anxiety and how, in this case, you can work using ANT in practice. Most often, a person evaluates his anxiety as something unpleasant, alien, wrong, shameful, and preventing him from living a full life. However, this linguistic internal attitude can be viewed from a completely different angle. You just have to check with the client; “Why is anxiety unpleasant, shameful or wrong for you?” - how a person thinks seriously and most often answers something like “this is not like everyone else!” Others are not worried at all, they always react calmly, but I am like an abnormal person. Going into the essence of such a client’s response, we understand that, in fact, normally every person is anxious to one degree or another, but the client views this from the perspective of “norm”, and he attributes his behavior and state to not the norm (linked to this attitude and with the image of oneself). Anxiety is partly a physiological process (work of the signaling system); in part it is mental and can manifest itself for a variety of reasons, ranging from somatic illness to overwork, psychological trauma (PTSD), crises of various kinds, or even mental disorder. One way or another, anxiety is like a part of a single organism and it must be considered inseparably from the person, that is, not to treat the symptom, but to help comprehensively, to work with the individual. In ANT, the problem is not the presence of anxiety as such, but the fight against it. That is, by opposing human nature, which is anxiety, a person unwittingly strengthens it, leaving no chance to understand the reasons.
