Today I would like to share some features of the interaction between a client and a specialist in psychotherapy. Specifically, I want to talk about those processes that seem strange and erroneous, but at the same time, are natural. I believe that this kind of legalization can be useful for both parties. Experience of embarrassment, awkwardness, anxiety at the beginning of work. Often communication in everyday life is based on a specific situation. Usually we know how to behave and what to say, and we also roughly understand how they will answer us. But the format of psychological work is atypical for ordinary dialogue communication. It’s completely normal to feel awkward in a new situation, especially when making new acquaintances. Not understanding what exactly to talk about, making long pauses, stuttering and making mistakes. It seems that you look stupid, clumsy, since you cannot write a story about your experience. At the same time, it is important to remember that your life experiences should not be collected into one big box to be sent to a specialist. You are sharing something very important and not always clear to you. It’s completely normal when you take time for yourself to think and collect yourself. Or in the process you realize that you wanted to describe it differently. It seems that going back to what has already been said is not productive and stalls the process. Walking in a circle can cause vivid negative emotions - irritation, hostility, sadness. At the same time, noticing that you return to a certain topic can be very good. Probably, by doing this you are not wasting time, but are becoming more familiar with a topic that is significant to you. It seems that working with a psychologist should quickly get rid of unpleasant feelings. Meanwhile, working with a psychotherapist launches the process of experiencing emotions. It can be difficult to face emotions that have been taboo for a long time. Therefore, it can be normal to be aware of them and spend some time with them. Sometimes it seems that the psychotherapist is “not enough” - as if he must give a reaction, assessment, advice or understand his client in a special way. As a rule, working with a client's life experience is a field into which a psychologist cannot bring something of his own. For this reason, a psychologist may seem scarce. Moreover, he, like all people, does not have the ability to see and feel another completely. For this reason, such feelings are normal. When describing difficult situations, I want everyone to have the opportunity to understand the other and, in turn, to be heard. In this process it is difficult to do without expressing your own attitude to what is happening. Fortunately, this option exists when working with a psychologist. Emerging thoughts and feelings on any occasion can be spoken and discussed. Dialogue about current thoughts and feelings is also not just normal, but very important.
