In conditions of uncertainty about the future, anxiety about today, and simply when there are differences in the vision of things, an all-consuming fear and misunderstanding arises, which can provoke conflicts between family and friends, between partners. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a highly effective treatment for relationship problems and can include both individual and couples therapy. There are many techniques for couples that are well researched and very effective in bringing people together and overcoming barriers to intimacy. With the help of cognitive behavioral therapy, couples can improve communication, increase helpful behaviors towards each other, and reconsider irrational thoughts that can drive a wedge between partners. Communication problems can arise in a variety of ways, including speaking, listening, or a combination of both. By taking communication skills training, you can learn to express yourself more effectively while ensuring a positive response from your partner. CBT for couples uses active listening techniques including exploration, validation, empathy, paraphrasing, and attention. Research has shown that traditional couples therapy is effective about 50% of the time. However, cognitive behavioral therapy for couples has been found to be effective in about 75-80% of cases. The most recent advances in couples therapy combine interventions to help couples change problem behaviors as well as learn to accept the partner's behavior that was the source of the conflict. Using a combination of acceptance and change strategies, couples learn to strengthen intimacy and effectively resolve differences. This form of couples therapy has been shown to be even more effective than other forms of CBT couples treatment. Acceptance therapy is a mindfulness-based therapy that incorporates elements of Buddhist mindfulness meditation and modern behavioral therapy techniques. Acceptance therapy in CBT does not correct negative thoughts, emotions and sensations, but teaches them to accept and control them. This rationale is based on accepting feelings such as fear, frustration and anxiety, which are a vital part of life and allow you to be more involved in what is happening around you. Negative feelings often persist in your life and affect your life in undesirable ways, even if you try to get rid of them. By accepting these feelings, you will be able to achieve your goals more effectively, and the negative factor can be significantly reduced. The goal of this type of therapy is to control your response to these feelings. Research has shown that acceptance therapy can have a significant impact on a range of problems, from anxiety and depression to chronic pain and even more serious conditions such as schizophrenia. Individual therapy through a cognitive model can also help people improve everything from interactions with casual acquaintances at work to relationships with significant others such as spouses or family members. Everyone has different challenges in creating and maintaining rewarding relationships, so CBT for couples is a very individual process. Cognitive behavioral therapy recognizes this and helps patients cope with the specific difficulties they are having. There are a number of well-researched methods for improving the quality of relationships. These include training self-confidence, developing emotion regulation skills, and restructuring cognitive functions. Related article: CBT.
