75 years ago, at the first WHO assembly, depression was recognized as a disease internationally for the first time. In 2023, according to WHO, 280 million people will be diagnosed with depression. - 3.8% of the population suffers from depression, including 5% of adults (4% of men and 6% of women) and 5.7% of people over the age of 60 years. -The prevalence of depression among women is approximately 50% higher than among men (I think this is due to the fact that women are more likely to seek help). -More than 10% of pregnant and new mothers worldwide experience depression. More than 700,000 people commit suicide every year. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in the 15–29 age group. There are several types of depressive episodes: single depressive episode, i.e. the first and only depressive episode in a person’s life; recurrent depressive disorder, i.e. a history of at least two depressive episodes; ibipolar disorder, in which depressive episodes alternate with phases of manic symptoms, including euphoria or irritability, increased activity or bursts of energy, and other symptoms such as verbose speech, racing ideas, inflated self-esteem, decreased sleep, distractibility, and impulsive recklessness behavior. In addition to making a diagnosis, the doctor must consider the severity of symptoms. The severity of symptoms is important for the choice of treatment tactics, social restrictions (work, driving, etc.). How do we determine the degree of severity? Mild depressive episode (2 main symptoms/2 additional), moderate (2/3 main symptoms and 4 additional), severe (3 main symptoms and more than 4 additional) Symptoms of depression according to ICD-10. Main symptoms: Reduced, depressed mood ;Increased fatigue; Anhedonia (inability to enjoy things that previously brought pleasure) Additional symptoms: 1. Cognitive symptoms (impaired attention and concentration); 2. Decreased self-esteem, feelings of guilt, worthlessness and uselessness; 3. Problems with sleep; 4. Suicidal thoughts/behavior; 5. Decreased appetite; 6. Negative vision of the future and thoughts about it. These symptoms must persist for 2 or more weeks.
