Dysmorphophobia - distorted perception of your body Living in times distorted by selfies and posts on social networks may not always be comfortable. And it's even scarier for those who have a hard time accepting the way they look. Dysmorphia (dysmorphophobia) is a distorted body image that often has many consequences in one's personal, romantic, sexual and/or professional life. Although reports suggest that almost equal numbers of men and women have body dysmorphia, men are more prone to muscle dysmorphia. Men also often find it difficult to open up about their feelings and problems, which makes the healing process even more difficult. Most of us have stood in front of the mirror wanting to change something about our appearance. Not being able to like the way you look is not that uncommon. However, body dysmorphia is more than just feeling insecure about your appearance. While many people would like to change the appearance of certain parts of their body, people with body dysmorphia will obsessively think about it for hours. Body dysmorphic disorder occurs primarily in childhood and is seen in teenagers and adults. Body dysmorphia can negatively impact work, relationships, creativity activities and so on. It can also lead to other mental disorders such as social phobia, depression or eating disorders. And of course, body dysmorphic disorder affects the intimate sphere of our lives. When we talk about attractiveness, we attach great importance to our appearance. Therefore, it is clear that body dysmorphia has a significant impact on one's sex life. According to a study of university students, people with body dysmorphia are more likely to engage in compulsive and impulsive sexual behavior. This behavior was caused by the need to focus on something other than feelings of inferiority. The intimate sphere can also become a way of seeking reassurance and physical validation from others. On the contrary, some people completely stop indulging in any form of physical intimacy for fear of being judged. Body dysmorphic disorder makes people very self-conscious and they prefer to isolate themselves completely. People with body dysmorphic disorder often try to change their appearance through cosmetic surgery, makeup, and so on. However, these methods can lead you further into a whirlpool of dwelling on your shortcomings, instead of feeling better. One of the most effective ways to combat this is psychotherapy. Treatment for body dysmorphia often involves a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy and medication. Nowadays, much more is known about body dysmorphia and how it can affect one's life as more and more people are starting to talk about it. But until now, it often goes unnoticed because people suffering from body dysmorphia try their best to hide the symptoms..
