Crisis is a very capacious and fundamental concept for practical psychology. A crisis means the impossibility of living as before, it means the need to change. A crisis can be excruciating; it is at least painful and difficult. But through a crisis, a person’s life changes. New horizons of development, self-development, a new level of relationships with life, even relationships with other people, come for a person through a crisis. There are different life crises. In developmental psychology they talk about normative crises, i.e. those that are caused by natural life processes and that implement new stages of age development. There are non-normative crises associated with optional, but very important events in a person’s individual life: the death of a loved one, serious illness, disability, etc. Roberto Assogioli, the founder of psychosynthesis, speaks of special crises, crises of spiritual development. The spiritual is understood not only and not so much as religious, but as everything related to values higher than ordinary ones: ethical, aesthetic, heroic, humanistic and altruistic. According to Assogioli, a person consists of different levels of the unconscious, consciousness and the “Higher Self”. The goal of development is comprehension, awareness of one’s parts and integration into a harmonious organic unity under the guidance of one’s “Higher Self.” This process of integration (transformation according to Assogioli) is divided into stages separated by specific crises. And like any crisis, they can be accompanied by various mental, emotional and even mental disorders. These crises are: the crisis preceding spiritual awakening; crisis caused by spiritual awakening; reaction associated with spiritual awakening; phases of the transformation process. The crisis preceding spiritual awakening. A person whose only reality is the visible and tangible physical world enters this crisis. A crisis occurs after a series of disappointments, after the shock of the death of a loved one, but sometimes without any apparent reason. It is characterized by a feeling of unreality and emptiness of everyday life, a loss of meaning in everyday and mundane affairs. This feeling grows and leads to various neurotic, sometimes psychotic, psychosomatic disorders. This crisis causes a conflict between different aspects of the personality on the one hand and aspirations of a moral, religious, humanistic or spiritual nature on the other. This crisis is resolved by the spiritual awakening of a person, the opening of a “channel” between the conscious and superconscious levels, between the “I” and the Self. The internal conflict at this moment disappears, and the person feels real relief. A crisis caused by spiritual awakening. The flow of light and energy caused by spiritual awakening cannot always be assimilated. This happens when aspects of the personality are developed inharmoniously, or there is a lag in the development of some parts. The line between the absolute and relative levels of truth is erased, the line between “I” and the highest self is erased. The inflowing spiritual energies feed and inflate the personal ego. Disorders that may be interpreted as paranoid delusions may occur. A person ascribes to his personal self the properties and qualities of the Transpersonal, Higher Self. In such a state, it is almost impossible to convince a person of his delusions. You can help him by accepting his condition, understanding him. It is possible and necessary to teach a person to distinguish between levels that are indistinguishable to him. A crisis caused by a reaction to a subsequent spiritual awakening. This crisis occurs when the flow of energies caused by spiritual awakening gradually and naturally subsides. The personality is filled and partially transformed, a significant part of its elements returns to their previous state. At the same time, an ideal model and a sense of direction remain, which is very important for further development. Sometimes, the energy of awakening is enough to transform the entire personality, and it immediately moves to the highest level of its functioning. But.
