Alexithymia is the inability to realize, express one’s feelings and the inability to recognize the feelings of other people.⠀Such a person has emotions, but does not understand them.⠀Causes:⠀Congenital alexithymia. Usually observed in children on the autism spectrum.⠀Acquired alexithymia. Formed as learning. For example, when a boy is not allowed to cry and generally show any emotions.⠀In this post I will talk about acquired alexithymia.⠀We need any emotions, good and bad. They signal us about something important, help us correct our behavior and make forecasts. For example, a person with developed empathy easily anticipates a person’s emotional reaction in a given situation. Also, a person who understands how he feels will be more sensitive to himself and will try to build himself a comfortable life as much as possible so as not to experience negative emotions.⠀The danger of alexithymia is that when a person does not understand his emotional experiences, psychosomatics begins. After all, the psyche cannot “reach out” to a person any other way if he or she is under prolonged stress or conflict.⠀I often hear from clients: “I’m fine, but I have psychosomatics.” This is an example when a person is completely out of touch with himself, he cannot even realize what is wrong in his life. If everything is fine with you, you cannot have psychosomatic diseases.⠀It is difficult for a person with alexithymia to understand what he wants. After all, our desires are closely related to vivid emotions. We always want only a good and pleasant day for us, and emotions help us understand this.⠀Rationalism and logical thinking predominate over creative thinking, difficulties with fantasizing are all also signs of alexithymia.⠀At sessions with clients, I constantly ask: “How do you feel?” ? What emotion do you leave with?” This helps develop emotional intelligence.⠀If you suspect that you have alexithymia, then I offer you a simple exercise. Just throughout the day, every 3 hours, ask yourself: “How am I feeling now?” And perhaps you will be surprised that throughout the day you experience the whole range of emotions.⠀What emotions are you experiencing at the moment?⠀Thank you for your attention
