Parkinson's disease is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that leads to the progressive degradation of brain cells responsible for controlling movement. It is named after the English physician James Parkinson, who first described its symptoms in 1817. The main symptoms of Parkinson's disease include:1. Tremor – trembling of the arms, legs, jaws or face. Usually starts on one side of the body and spreads to other parts of the body over time.2. Bradykinesia – slowness of movements, difficulty in starting movements, decreased facial expressions and gestures. Gradually leads to limited motor skills and difficulty performing daily tasks.3. Rigidity is increased muscle tone that can cause a feeling of unusual rigidity or resistance when moving the limbs.4. Postural instability is difficulty maintaining balance and coordinating movements, leading to an increased risk of falls.5. Problems with gait – gait may become shuffling, with small steps or slow.6. Speech and Voice Problems – Changes in voice may manifest as stuttering, poor articulation, and lack of vocal strength.7. Neuropsychiatric symptoms – may include depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances, memory problems and cognitive impairment.8. Other symptoms may include changes in the sense of smell, loss of tolerance to smells, digestive problems, decreased sexual function, weight loss and urinary problems. It is important to understand that the symptoms of Parkinson's disease can develop differently in each patient, and their combination and severity may vary. Disappearance or change in one or more of these symptoms may also be associated with disease progression. Therefore, it is important to see a doctor for an accurate diagnosis and proper treatment. Parkinson's disease usually begins after 50-60 years of age, but rarely can manifest itself at a young age (juvenile parkinsonism). Its cause is still not fully understood, but genetic and environmental factors are thought to play a major role. Treatment for Parkinson's disease is aimed at relieving symptoms and slowing the progression of the disease. This includes the use of medications, physical therapy, speech therapy, nutritional management, and palliative care support. If the disease is severe, surgery, such as deep brain stimulation, may be recommended. Parkinson's disease is a progressive disease and affects each patient differently. Regular observation by a doctor and adherence to recommendations help improve the quality of life of patients and minimize disorders and limitations associated with the disease.
