Cognitive therapy for life. Good day, dear subscribers and friends, I continue my series of articles talking about how cognitive-behavioral therapy can improve life). As I already said, that the main task of cognitive therapy is to teach a person to highlight his bad thoughts, which lead him to negative emotions, feelings and experiences, and those, in turn, to negative behavior. Today I will clearly explain how, from the perspective of cognitive therapy, our mental interpretation of events occurs and phenomena encountered in life. This interpretation consists of three levels of the cognitive process. A good example is with a glass of beer))) on the surface of which there is foam in the middle, the beer itself, and sediment at the bottom. So, today we’ll talk about involuntary, automatic, negative thoughts, which, as shown in the picture lie on the surface. I will call them NNM for short. As Aron Beck said, these thoughts are automatic because they constantly appear in the head and resemble a rapid stream of consciousness or background that goes with the main direction of our thoughts. They are called automatic because they are like fireworks, appear in the head and go out, and emotions the pain they cause can last for days or weeks. For example, you are late for a plane, stuck in a traffic jam and reproach yourself, “I’m a fool, I do everything at the last moment.” And in dozens of other situations in which we find ourselves, this ticker of negative thoughts, criticism, and evaluations works. It’s like a quagmire that constantly sucks us into negativity. Therefore, at the first stage, in order to change your life, you need to learn to notice these thoughts and understand how they affect. Victor is 37 years old. Born into a military family. His parents were very strict with him in childhood, praised him little, and constantly pointed out his inconsistency with his peers, friends, or some ideals. The family had a strict system of requirements for Victor, which he had to meet: be an excellent student, return home no later than 22:00, communicate with those friends who his parents liked, etc. At the moment, he is an entrepreneur and often sets himself impossible goals and objectives, from which he experiences constant dissatisfaction with himself and the results of which he has achieved. I practically never showed up at home, since it is difficult to delegate powers to subordinates and I had to do a lot myself. Due to the difficult situation associated with the pandemic, his business practically went bankrupt, and his wife announced that she was leaving and taking the children. Against the backdrop of this situation, he began to have a serious crisis and severe depression. Cognitive behavioral therapy helped Victor look at himself from the outside, take a meta position and learn to understand his destructive thoughts and destructive basic beliefs about his Worthlessness. Thus, if a person has depression or some kind of stressful condition, these thoughts of NMMG will convince him in the internal dialogue that he is worthless, bad, unattractive, lonely.
