I already have a number of publications about the Shadow, you can read it in the selection (link here) on the theory of analytical psychology. Shadow qualities are qualities that are not accepted in us by family or society and, under this pressure, go into the unconscious and are denied by us. A common example of this: if a person in childhood was condemned for displays of aggression, the options could be from “girls don’t fight”, to “a child has no right to be angry with his parents and should be comfortable,” then everything related to bright manifestations or defending one’s boundaries will have a very negative connotation for such a person. Everything connected with aggression will seem disgusting and repulsive to him (her). Aggression will still break through from time to time in the form of bright flashes or will simply be redirected into itself. After all, the fact that we have pushed part of our personality into the unconscious does not mean that we have completely destroyed this part. And the unconscious factor will be very clearly visible in such cases, because such a person, after an outburst of aggression, will say: “It wasn’t me! I never get angry!” And where is the gold here? The reader has the right to ask such a question. But to do this, you need to understand a little about another thesis of Jung. He argued that all mental content has different poles, very conditionally, positive and negative. If we translate this into a joke, then you can hit it with a frying pan, or you can cook dinner. And the psychological content with both poles at once, positive and negative, goes into the shadow aspects. It’s exactly the same in our example with aggression. Aggression can lead to fighting or rash actions. But he can allow himself to get a salary increase at work or set personal boundaries in relationships. After all, a person without aggression is like a castle without walls. In fact, here we can talk about different options for a person’s adaptation to different situations. If there is some need or task, a person can solve it: with intelligence, cunning, pressure, stubbornness, and so on and so forth. But the disappearance of some traits into shadow qualities deprives us of a number of options for action and this begins to cause problems in life, which is what people often come to a psychologist with. And when a person for the first time consciously uses shadow traits for his own benefit, it gives a huge influx of strength and joy, because a person simply returns to himself what is already his by birthright. To summarize. That Golden Shadow is that part of our personality that we need for a full life, but which we deny as “bad”. Maybe it's time to get yours back?
