Cognitive behavioral therapy has begun to show positive characteristics in recent years in treating patients with significant eating disorder symptoms. Improved techniques are on the same level as classic options for eliminating the problem, however, they have a broader effect, that is, they allow not only to normalize the patient’s condition in terms of systematic food intake, but also to optimize the mental state. Types of eating disorders for which CBT techniques are indicated Specialists in The field of CBT formally divides existing human eating disorders into 4 distinct classes based on the type of illness and the diagnostic presentation of the illness during initial testing: Anorexia Nervosa or AN; Bulimia Nervosa/BN; Binge Eating Disorder (BED); Other Specific Eating Disorders , manifested during the ritual of eating, or subsequently. Shame and eating disorders: how are these concepts related? Psychiatrists, therapists, nutritionists and a whole group of other related specialists periodically conducted studies that are closely related to human behavior in society and beyond in the presence of diseases categories of eating disorders, or depressive disorders of various types. All kinds of tests, personal examinations and sessions with psychotherapists helped to establish that more than half of the patients experienced or are experiencing a feeling of shame from their painful condition. It manifests itself openly, or is carefully masked by other behavioral signals. Since society quite actively establishes the relationship between self-esteem and a person’s weight, there are often cases of manifestation of an acute sense of shame for the state of one’s body, weight, current parameters in front of third parties (relatives, friends, classmates, just strangers) who can give a pronounced assessment of the appearance of a person with an eating disorder. Accumulating negative components can be aggravated by problems in the family, bullying from loved ones, after suffering a trauma or acts of a violent nature. How does a sense of shame manifest itself in people with eating disorders ?A sick person can express a feeling of shame in front of others in different ways: Refusal of food, obsession with meeting generally accepted “standards”, Expressed aggression, protest against any interference in the current process of eating food or a practiced regime. A depressed state, combined with self-doubt, isolation, lack of sociability. Apathy, complete lack of desire to contact an external “aggressor” (society, family, colleagues) Self-restraint, destructive self-deprecation, non-acceptance of oneself and one’s body. Specifics of the action of cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy Cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy is a complex technique , in which the dough interconnects the nuances of cognitive and behavioral therapy. Its main goal is the opportunity to demonstrate to the patient that he can learn to independently monitor his negative mood and thoughts (the so-called thoughts of an eating disorder), combat their negative effects and change them to more positive and rational ones (such a replacement gradually forms the basis for increasing self-esteem, developing a sense of the value of one’s self, regardless of external factors - height, weight, body condition). Specialists direct patients with eating disorder to gradually eliminate negative emotions, which form the basis for the development of behavioral disorders that lead to overeating or restricting food intake. One of the key problems of the patient is a clear belief that normal self-esteem is based on the figure and body proportions. The treatment process using CBT significantly benefits from scientifically based methods. At the very beginning, the specialist gets to know the patient to set up initial trust impulses. At the same time, the current state is assessed.
