It is important for the psychologist to be very attentive with the client in matters of shame. Such a situation that the therapist knows something that the client does not know is very shameful for the client. It is not possible to completely avoid such situations when the therapist makes the client feel shame, but it is important that the therapist sees for himself how he makes the client feel shame : - does not provide sufficient support to the client - does not provide sufficient acceptance of the client’s knowledge The therapist may overdo it in his desire not to shame the client. If the therapist gives too much support to the client, the client may feel too needy for support and feel ashamed because of this. The psychologist's job is to work with the client to sort out the differences between them regarding shame so that the therapist can see how it causes shame in the client, and the client saw this too. The therapist must take responsibility for the shame that the client has. Thus, the therapist recognizes that the shame that the client experiences is not his shame, but it is a field phenomenon, and that the therapist himself is actively involved in making the client feel shame. If the client causes the therapist to feel shame, then this means that the therapist may be using some kind of shame defense. And then the therapist needs to return the client’s shame to the client, and find out with him where he got this shame from, who is shaming him. When the therapist realizes something about the client and tells him about it, then, in this way, he can shame him. For example, if a therapist tells a client that his hands are clenched, he may induce shame in the client. That is, it turns out that the therapist in this situation is aware of a lot, but the client is aware of little. The therapist thus gives a message to the client that he is smart, and the client still needs to work a lot on himself to become as cool as the therapist. So it is very easy for a therapist to turn on the client’s sense of shame, so it is important for the therapist to be aware of this, and try not to cause shame in the client again, to be attentive in this.
