Art therapy usually improves people's self-esteem and helps them discover their creative potential. A person who insisted that he cannot draw and has never done this, in practice is convinced of the opposite and is no longer afraid to use drawing as a universal way of self-expression, understandable without words. Sometimes it happens that a client drew a picture, but is categorically dissatisfied with it . He doesn’t like anything about his creation, and the drawing only strengthens his opinion that he is far from an artist, creativity is not his strong point, and in general he is not capable of anything. If a person habitually devalues himself, it is difficult for him to recognize his work as meaningful. How to be in this case? Don't despair. There are many ways to change this opinion, even if a person's resistance to still being a creator is very strong. One of these methods uses a regular homemade cardboard frame with an internal window size of approximately 6x10 cm (depending on the scale of the work). The client is given this frame, and he is asked to find at least some small fragment of the drawing that he still likes. At first, the client is surprised and dumbfounded, but searching for the fragment turns out to be a very exciting activity, because... there is a transition from a plot image to an abstraction of lines and colors. Various associations begin to arise, which can become topics for meaningful conversations. In my practice, there has never been a single case when a favorite fragment with deep subtext could not be found. In further work there can be many tactics: you can just talk about this piece; you can ask to draw a new picture from an enlarged fragment; you can cut it out, stick it on a large sheet and “draw” what’s missing to it; or you can put it in a frame and put it on the nightstand next to the bed, as a resource “good transitional object”, etc. This technique can also be used if the conversation about the current image has reached a dead end, if, logically, you need to move from macro to micro: how to look at a situation under a microscope if you need to find a resource where you can’t find it during the day. Creative use of this simple but very interesting technique for you! Svetlana Shmeleva
