Our brain is designed in such a way that we often live by the principle “there is no problem - invent one.” So, it’s very easy to give yourself an extra headache by worrying too much about one tiny failure, while forgetting how many significant achievements preceded it. And yes, many people, including very successful ones, fall into this trap. Why does this happen and what should we do to avoid falling into this trap? It’s all about the subjectivity of our relationships with others in principle. The world around us is largely objective: we know that the sky is blue, the grass is green, and day always gives way to night. And we don’t need to comprehend or brainstorm these data; they are, as they say, absolute; they cannot be taken away or added to. When it comes to our relationships with others, we tend to interpret what is happening in a hundred million ways. Did you praise and say that the job was done well? Great, of course, but why “good” and not “excellent”? Did a passerby give you an evil look? Of course, this is in our direction, and not because he was thinking about something about himself. The good news is that it is very possible to learn to see the world more objectively if you make focused efforts for this. First, admit that there is a problem. Next, analyze the mechanics of the process we are talking about. The thing is that our brain tends to process incoming information as quickly as possible, and therefore it filters out everything that it considers unnecessary. When we consider ourselves worse than others, the brain obeys and begins to present what is happening around us as arguments to confirm our position. It is easier for our brain to agree with us than to convince us and waste extra energy on it. In most cases, we experience anxiety and a sense of threat when, in fact, there is none. In the same way, we doubt our own successes and have no doubt at all about the horror of failure. How to deal with all this? First, understand where exactly the distortion occurs in your particular case, and then try to analyze objective reality more and take your word for it less.
