Emotions are mental reactions that naturally contribute to the response to a stress factor. Emotions are necessary for a person, as they warn of danger, motivate to achieve goals, protect against threats, and save a person’s life. Let’s consider emotions from an evolutionary point of view. Envy in an evolutionary way helped to accumulate material wealth, dominate in front of partners, gain access to food and sex , developed the ability to move up the hierarchical ladder, to be more effective in a group. Anxiety helped protect offspring and people from impending danger, in case someone from another tribe might try to seize territory or if predators appeared from the forest that could kill a person. In the case of social anxiety, it can be maintained by a quiet voice, lowered eyes, and changes in posture. This behavior indicates that a person is not a threat to another. Humiliation allowed a person to put another at risk of being thrown out of society if they did something wrong, removing the person from the group and taking away all the privileges given by the tribe, leading to a loss of resources and protection. Anger helps a person protect himself and his offspring from danger. Anger indicates that a person’s personal boundaries have been violated, other people have invaded the territory, causing damage and harm. Anger allows you to accumulate resources and protect yourself, offspring and home. Jealousy is associated with strong emotional experiences, which threatens the relationship between a man and a woman. In the primitive period, promiscuous relationships were the norm, the feeling of jealousy had not yet been formed, so there was a great risk of wasting energy on raising someone else's offspring. Therefore, jealousy is aimed at protecting resources. Sadness is evolutionarily useful, as it informed ancestors that there is no point in continuing the same action that does not lead to results. The goal of a client’s work with a psychologist is not to get rid of emotions, but to accept the entire range of emotions and feelings, learn to live with them.
