Now it is “fashionable” to talk about caring for yourself. And you know, I like this “fashion”, this trend. Yes, these same type of words are boring and even annoying, and the very concept of showing kindness towards yourself has not become less important because of this “pop”. This is not my first publication on the topic of relationships towards yourself and developing kindness towards yourself, here you can read about self-compassion. There is no “delete unnecessary” button in the brain, so we cannot remove critical thoughts, erase from memory the experience where we were humiliated. This is impossible. Instead of trying to develop a kind attitude towards yourself by fighting thoughts, it is better to do this through organizing pleasant activities for yourself, through noticing and naming judgmental thoughts. Below I will share an exercise that I often give to clients in sessions in the most various cases: when they are in pain and need support, when our request concerns our attitude towards ourselves, when working with an internal critic, etc. Exercise “Healer’s Hand” Purpose of the exercise: developing compassion for yourself Imagine that your hand is the hands of someone very a kind and caring person. Slowly and smoothly place it either on the area of the heart, or where your feeling is located. If you do not want to touch yourself, just hold your hand over the place where the feeling is concentrated. Perhaps it makes itself felt most strongly in the chest, head, neck or stomach? Wherever it is placed, place your hand there. (If you can't determine where your feeling is, place your hand on your heart or hold it over that area.) Let your hand rest calmly on your body. Feel its warmth penetrate your skin. Imagine that your body around the painful sensation relaxes, the tension goes away, and a free space appears. Gently touch your pain or numbness - as if it were a crying baby, a whining puppy, or a fragile piece of art. Treat yourself with warmth and care - as if you were treating someone you care about. Let your fingers exude kindness. Now use your other hand. Place one hand on your chest and the other on your stomach, and leave them there. Treat yourself kindly and carefully: tune in to your body, give yourself care, comfort and support.
