Good afternoon, friends! Today we will talk about surprise and interest as one of the basic human emotions. Surprise is a short-term and sudden outburst of emotion that helps free the nervous system from the previous emotion and directs all attention to the object. As you can see, this emotion has its own meaning and meaning. Surprise can be positive (for example, when you were given an unexpected gift or a surprise), neutral (for example, news about new neighbors) and extremely negative (sudden dismissal from work or a fine for illegal parking). But one way or another, this emotion is easy to distinguish from all the others by its characteristic facial expressions. In a person who is surprised or interested in something, as a rule, you will see: raised eyebrows, wide open eyes, open mouth. Even though this emotion is seemingly positive, it still always brings some stress to the body, so it needs more data to process it and more oxygen to cope with new circumstances and unexpected changes. It is interesting that after the first seconds, surprise can take on a negative connotation when the information received is realized, assimilated and evaluated by the person. Also, surprise is easily transformed into longer-term interest. These two emotions charge us with energy, help us develop, motivating us to learn and make new discoveries, master complex skills and abilities, and realize creative potential. However, it is interest that leads to the formation of cognitive distortion. This phenomenon is called “salience bias.” It goes like this: people have a habit of attaching greater importance to information that caught their attention and surprised them, while simultaneously ignoring other “boring” facts. This is why many are afraid to fly, remembering how they saw terrible footage of car accidents on TV, but at the same time they calmly drive a car , where the risk of dying in an accident is hundreds if not thousands of times greater. Share - in what situations do you experience surprise and interest? Which of the recent events aroused these emotions in you?
