During psychotherapy, it is not uncommon for a moment to come when a psychologist/psychotherapist becomes angry about something. That’s just annoying and that’s all! On the one hand, a person who is not familiar with the work of a psychologist can say that this is nonsense. That a psychologist is meant to calm you down, and not to get angry with him, and even for your own money. In fact, being angry with a psychologist is a completely common thing. I’ll make a reservation right away: there really are moments when we are faced with the incompetence of specialists, which causes strong emotions in us. Such a “psychologist” is capable of treating a person evaluatively, criticizing, devaluing, and even manipulating in every possible way. It’s difficult for me to call such specialists specialists. Fraudsters - and that's all. You can imagine a simple example with a school teacher. It happens that he gives a bad mark in the journal for a poorly done job, and the schoolchild gets angry with him. But did the teacher cause this anger? No. A two is an objective mark for the work, and the teacher did it silently. Perhaps the student is even angry at himself at this moment, but transfers this to the teacher. But if the teacher gives a bad grade, starts scolding him in front of the whole class, compares him with excellent students... Well, everything is clear here. Anger will be appropriate. A similar situation occurs with psychologists. Let's not forget that this is a person who is immersed in your world, into which, perhaps, you have never allowed anyone. So what did this psychologist want! Find out all the secrets! Of course, this can cause anger and resistance. In psychoanalytic therapy, such reactions are taken especially into account. The phenomenon of transference is familiar to many. Transference is when a client/patient begins to react to a psychologist/psychotherapist in the same way that he reacted to a significant adult in childhood (or now). That is, in the process of therapy, the very atmosphere where anger arises for one reason or another is recreated. This material is analyzed by a specialist, helping to resolve such a reaction, an internal conflict. That is, the person’s reaction does not correspond to reality. The best way in such a situation is to talk about anger with the specialist himself. I must warn you that this is often difficult for many clients. Again, for various reasons. But be sure to take a close look at the specialist’s work. Are there any obvious facts indicating his incompetence? Or did you misinterpret something yourself? This can again be resolved in a conversation with the psychologist himself. If you are sure that you are being harmed, change the specialist. Perhaps, having discussed your anger at another specialist with a new psychologist, you will discover something new for yourself.© Psychologist Nikita Myshev, 2023. All rights reserved.
