There are many people around me who regularly support others ─ financially, physically, emotionally. I also try to make charity a part of my life. Why is this necessary from a psychological point of view? I have two answers for you. The first reason is that we do this out of empathy. This is such a very sincere, open feeling that inspires help. By empathizing with a person or animal, we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, reveal our emotions. The second reason is that in this way we increase self-esteem and want to earn approval. Charity in this case helps us feel important. Whatever it is, helping others makes us feel happiness, joy, and satisfaction. By providing charitable assistance, we voluntarily share our funds, time, and other resources, but at the same time we are not empty, but filled. There is an exchange of energies that charges us. We also learn to care about others and get rid of excessive selfishness. Here I want to say one thing: it is desirable that charity be regular. Not as a gesture of goodwill once a year during the winter holidays. Then it will truly fill you up! For example, I am a member of the Spas Foundation, which helps the poor, large families, and families with disabled children. It is important for me to understand that I provide support to specific people, and here I have such an opportunity. Once a week I provide free psychological assistance to mothers, and it is very valuable for me to see their eyes, read their messages, watch their changes for the better. Globally speaking, the essence of charity is to generate goodness. Therefore, let me clarify: when we give alms to disadvantaged people who, with the help of our money, will continue to ruin their lives, this is not entirely true. I love Nikulin’s phrase: if each of us manages to make another person happy, at least one, everyone on earth will be happy. We often give gifts to children, relatives, and friends. But giving something to strangers is a completely different experience, genuine happiness and a lot of energy. And if you have never practiced this before, I sincerely recommend it!
